6. Literary Elements
Author's Purpose-Tim writes this to express and show what goes on in a war zone. He wants you to feel like you are there at the Vietnam War.
Tone-Tim writes out of anger and regrets. All through the book he shows where he could have done things better or that people would be alive if he would have done certain things.
Mood-As an audience member, I am shocked. Never could I have imagined the horror that goes on in a war like this.
Voice-The author's voice is regretful as well. .He tells his life through books because of his experience. All his stories are from being in Vietnam.
Inciting Force-In The Things They Carried, Kiowa and Mitchell Sanders were sitting in the marsh where they were looking at a picture of Sander's girlfriend. When they turned on the flashlight, that triggered a target for the enemy which cause them to fire. This action killed Kiowa.
Foreshadowing-Throughout this novel, there are numerous scenes that are telling of the ending. When doing this, the author leaves the reader in suspense wanting to know what happened for the scene to turn out the way that it did.
Flashback- Tim uses flashback when he takes his daughter back to Vietnam to their stationed site. Tim returns to the marshy mud and finds himself looking back on what happened to Kiowa.
Imagery- When Tim O' Brien writes to tell about a specific part of the novel, he often uses imagery. When they were in the mountains in Vietnam would be a great example.

3. Historical Views of Vietnam War
The country of Vietnam was split into two sections in the year of 1954. There was the communist north, and there was the democratic south. The United States of America is known as a country to fight against communism. So America gets involved. America has always been a supporter of the democratic side of any country because we want to keep communism from spreading. Supposedly on top of fighting for our belief, we were attacked. IN the year of 1965, we sent over 40,000 troops to Vietnam.
Back then, the average man and woman to get drafted was around the age of 23. There was an average of 2.5 million who served in the war. Most of the people who were killed were from north Vietnam. The country of America hit a tremendous amount of debt that rose to an estimate of about $146 billion. While we continued our debt, the soldiers announced that they were honored to serve in the war and would do it over if given a chance.
This was said because we have a tremendous outreach to stopping communism. The country of Vietnam was destroyed. Still to this day, there is communism and plenty of homeless people that have no place to go. There is no more north and south Vietnam because they have come together as one, but that does not mean communist still does not exist.

5. Character Sketch- Tim O' Brien
Our group chose Tim O' Brien for the character sketch. Tim goes from being a normal teenager to being drafted into the Vietnam War. He second guesses himself, but in the long run, he chooses that it is best if he serves his country. O' Brien was a brave man even when he did not want to be. He said that he would kill, and that he could possibly die all because he was embarrassed not to. Back then, men were seen as cowards for not going to war or doing things that men should do. Tim did not want to be looked down upon by his family and friends.
